New Toy

Posted in photography at 3:23 pm by Mike Milinkovich

Meet my new toy, the Nikon D80. I’ve been wanting to get a really nice digital SLR for a very very long time. At least a couple of years, for all of the very same reasons as Ken. With all of the options available for it, and the 10Mpix image size, this could very well be the last camera I ever buy.

I’ve really just started playing around with it. But I am already completely blown away by the quality of the design. So many options. So much control. But with such a carefully thought out user interface that you don’t feel overwhelmed by it. The folks at Nikon clearly spent some quality time thinking about how to build this.

Birthday Surprise

Posted in family at 10:13 pm by Mike Milinkovich

So folks who know me know that Nick went to Europe this summer with the MEI Academy. It was a wonderful experience and he made some lifelong friends.

This weekend, five of his friends from southern Ontario made the trek to Ottawa to surprise Nick for his birthday. I think the photos say it all.

To those who made the trip, thanks! It certainly made for a special birthday for him.

Home Again…

Posted in family, travel at 11:02 pm by Mike Milinkovich

So I’m back home after a tiring trip to California.

First thing to note is that while I was gone, Nick passed his drivers test! He’s now a licensed threat on the highways 🙂

I had dinner with Mark, Claire and Alex last night at Il Fornaio in Palo Alto. We swapped Christmas presents and had a great meal. I’ve been to that restaurant a number of times before, and it’s always been great.

I bumped into Tim O’Reilly and Allison Randall there, as they were celebrating Allison’s birthday at the table beside us. Yet another reminder that it’s a small world.

Good luck

Posted in family at 5:52 pm by Mike Milinkovich

So it just occurred to me: despite the fact that I have not traveled in six weeks, I am going to be out of town when Nick does his driver’s test on Tuesday. Crap 😦

We were out for an hour this afternoon mostly practicing his parking (shopping mall and parallel). He was a little rusty, but after an hour he was doing great. The main problem is that the Xterra is high and short, so it’s complete different than what he was used to during drivers ed. But I really think he was getting the hang of it after a little practice.

Good luck Nick!

On the road…

I am heading to San Francisco tomorrow (Monday, Dec. 11) for the Eclipse board meeting and other random meetings. I’m hoping to have dinner with Mark, Claire and Alex on Thursday night.

But what I’m really hoping is that my upgrades for the flight home will come through!

Ottawa Sun Story

Posted in hockey at 12:37 pm by Mike Milinkovich

Here’s the story that was printed in the Ottawa Sun about our recent tournament win. Our piece is near the bottom.

The writer is Don Wilcox, who is the coach of the Mooseheads. His day job is as an editor with the Ottawa Sun.

I would have to say that our team this year is proof that good hockey teams are built around good defence. Ryan Verhoek got three shut outs in the tournament, and gave up a total of two goals over the five games of the tournament. But its not just goaltending. This is without a doubt the finest six defencemen I’ve ever coached. Not only do they do a great job of shutting down the opposition, but they chipped in a number of key goals as well.

Tournament Champs

Posted in hockey at 10:25 pm by Mike Milinkovich

Many thanks to the Nepean Moosheads for hosting the tournament this weekend. I’m looking forward to seeing the story in the Ottawa Sun this Friday. (Don Wilcox, coach of the Mooseheads has an inside track to getting stories into the Sun.)

The boys played really well during the tournament. I was especially happy to see them pull out wins in two 1-0 games which were very very close.
